Melbourne's third consecutive win ended a disappointing season on a positive note. With both teams well and truly out of the finals race they threw defence out the window and engaged in a 40 goal shootout.

Eight minutes into the last quarter Melbourne were seven goals in front before hanging on grimly in the face of a blistering comeback. It was their first win over the Bulldogs since Round 14, 1996.

White, Johnstone - playing his finest game for the year - and McDonald were the best for Melbourne in their last hit-out for the year. Much like the crash from 1998 to 1999, 2000 to 2001 had promised a lot but delivered very little. At least three straight wins to end the year was something to build on. Simon Godfrey tagged the dangerous Nathan Brown out of the game, restricting him to three touches.

Alistair Nicholson suffered an ankle injury, and Steven Febey hurt his hamstring in what ended up being his final game. David Neitz and Craig Ellis were reported for wrestling each other. It was Ellis' last game for the Dogs before being traded to Melbourne in the off-season. Neitz was fined $5000 on one charge, had another withdrawn and was found not guilty of striking.
