Prevented from playing footy until the age of 15 by a father who had suffered injuries in his playing career, Godfrey took longer to develop than many other players. He began his career with Mitcham under 16's, before being recruited by the Eastern Ranges U18 side. He played VFL football for Box Hill before being placed on the Demons supplementary list in 1999.

Having played every game for Sandringham in 2000, Godfrey had his first taste of senior football towards the end of that year as a replacement for knee reconstruction victim James McDonald but was dropped for the finals series and instead played in the Sandringham VFL premiership side.

Began his career as an out-and-out midfielder and finished fifth in the 2003 best and fairest but finished his career as a tagger. Often in and out of the side he won another premiership with the Zebras in 2005.

Godfrey was delisted at the end of 2007. He played for Norwood in the Eastern Football League from 2008 and was captain in 2010 before re-joining his original junior club Mitcham. He coached their Under 17 side in 2013. He later played at Ferntree Gully, captaining them to a premiership in 2016 before retiring.
