In a week where all the talk was of the Melbourne Hawks merger the 14th placed Demons sprung a major upset against a Carlton side playing for a double chance.
At half time Melbourne were 38 points in front and looking comfortable, after eight goals to three during the quarter - all three Carlton goals coming from 50m penalties. Early in the last quarter they were still 50 points in front, but through some slashing football and eight unanswered goals in 17 minutes Carlton drew to within a point before Darren O'Brien kicked a steadier and Melbourne added two more.
Stynes, Neitz and Obst. were best for Melbourne. Neitz kicked 8 goals from set shots. Shaun Smith suffered his second broken arm for the season.
Paul Hopgood and Todd Viney were reported for striking Scott Camporeale and Craig Bradley respectively. Both used the unusual defence that merger talks had contributed to their actions but were each suspended for one match.
Shaun Smith (arm) and Darren Kowal (ankle) were both injured. Glenn Lovett was a late withdrawal with a calf injury and was replaced by Adem Yze.
