Debuted for North Melbourne in 1987 and spent nine seasons there for 61 games as a forward and midfielder. Unable to break into a star-studded midfield he crossed to Melbourne and played 41 games over two seasons before being delisted.

Clarkson stayed at the Demons as conditioning coach in 1998, before beginning a coaching career with Werribee before moving on to St. Kilda as a specialist coach, and Central Districts where he won an SANFL premiership. Spent two years as a midfield/forward coach with Port Adelaide before being appointed senior coach of Hawthorn in 2005 where he won four premierships.
