Having extended their lead on fifth placed Geelong to a game and a half, the Redlegs suffered a surprise defeat at the Lake Oval which sent them back to the pack with a thud.

With a tricky wind blowing across the ground, Melbourne's forward line let them down with a number of easy shots missed. The home side were not as wasteful, and while Melbourne's defence played well, but they couldn't keep South out forever. The visitors started well but couldn't break through the home side's defence and eventually conceded the first four goals. They rallied before the end of the quarter but only scored one major.

The visitors opened the second quarter with a determined attack, but congested play slowed the game down. South quickly took control again but their kicking was wayward compared to the first quarter. For 10 minutes neither team could score as the two backlines held firm, then three quick goals by the Reds slashed the margin to three. Their ruck had the advantage, cancelling out South Melbourne's aerial superiority but a late goal to the home side restored an 11 point margin at half time.

Melbourne improved their pace and kicking to open the third quarter, and within 10 minutes goals to Esposito and Jones had them ahead for the first time. South quickly regained the lead with two goals of their own. The lead changed hands twice more before three quarter time, and South kicked a goal immediately after the half to leave Melbourne nearly three majors behind and another shortly after was the sealer.

Abernethy, Ogden and Esposito were best.

South Melbourne 24.21.165 d. Melbourne 13.14.92
