In a week where all the talk was of the Melbourne Hawks merger, the 14th placed Demons sprung a major upset against a Carlton side playing for a double chance.
At half time Melbourne le by 38 points looked comfortable, having just put on an eight goal to three quarter. All three Carlton goals came from 50 metre penalties. Early in the last quarter the Demons still led by 50 points, but eight unanswered goals in 17 minutes Carlton drew to within a point before. On the verge of one of the great collapses, Darren O'Brien kicked the steadier before Melbourne added two more and held on to win.
Neil Balme said "our blokes gave it everything they've got. We took it up to them and got a break and momentum. They should be really proud about what they did today."
Stynes, Neitz and Obst. were best for Melbourne. Neitz kicked 8 goals from set shots.
Paul Hopgood and Todd Viney were reported for striking Scott Camporeale and Craig Bradley respectively. Both used the unusual defence that merger talks had contributed to their actions but were each suspended for one match.
Shaun Smith suffered his second broken arm of the season, while Darren Kowal injured his ankle. Glenn Lovett was a late withdrawal with a calf injury, replaced by Adem Yze.
