With their season completely ruined by a 2-10 first half of the year, Melbourne had started to win some respect back late in the year. They went to Adelaide and beat the Crows, then returned to Victoria and thrashed Richmond.

The Demons led by 26 at half time before Steven Stretch came off the bench and goalled with both his first two kicks.

Allen Jakovich, recently returned from injury, only kicked two goals and instead opted to protect his hamstring by setting up several of his teammates with goals. Melbourne ended up registering 14 goalkickers in a match, which remains the all-time club record.

Best were G. Lovett, J. Stynes and Lovell. Haydn Robins was reported for striking and suspended for one match. He also suffered suspected torn knee ligaments and a suspected broken arm but managed to return after his one week ban.
