With their season ruined by a 2-10 start, Melbourne continued to win back respect late in the year. They'd beaten Adelaide a week earlier, before returning to Victoria and thrashing the Tigers to jump them on the ladder into 11th. It was their first back-to-back wins for the season.
The lead was out to 45 points at the 23 minute mark of the second quarter, before three late goals by the Tigers dragged the margin back 26 points at the half. Steven Stretch came off the bench for the first time late in the third term and goalled with his first two kicks. Sean Charles kicked three goals in a quick burst in the third quarter as his side opened a lead of nearly nine goals at the last change.
Allen Jakovich was rushed back into the side despite not being at full fitness. He kicked two goals but turned provider, playing a hand in five goals for teammates. Jakovich was one of a club record 14 goalkickers.
Best were G. Lovett, J. Stynes and Lovell. Haydn Robins was reported for striking and suspended for one match. He also suffered suspected torn knee ligaments and a suspected broken arm but managed to return after his one week ban. Paul Bryce tore shoulder ligaments in what would be his last game for Melbourne.
