200 Games
Tassie Johnson

On a day when Tassie Johnson became the first Tasmanian to play 200 VFL games, the three games bottom of the ladder Demons caused the upset of the season by knocking over the top of the table Blues in a thriller.

When the Blues were 18 points in front at the first change things looked grim for the Demons, as they so often had in a year where they'd won just two matches, but by half time they'd dragged themselves back into the game and on the back of rookies Greg Wells and Danny Jennings they were in front by the 12 minute mark of the last quarter. Wells' goal gave the Demons a 12 point lead, and the first gamer was dominant in the middle.

For one of many times during the year Greg Parke and Ross Dillon were forming a lethal partnership in the forward line, but for once they were actually rewarded for their good play. The win gave Melbourne a tiny hope of avoiding the wooden spoon if they could win their two remaining matches and see Footscray and/or Fitzroy not win one. A clash against Fitzroy a week later would decide whether or not they were still a chance.

Best were Dillon, Parke and Walker.
