Melbourne's sole selection in the 2019 Mid-Season Draft made his senior debut five weeks later. He played five games at the end of 2019 but didn't appear in 2020 and was delisted at the end of the season.

Dunkley was the son of former Sydney player Andrew and brother of Western Bulldogs player Josh. His sister Lara played for the Melbourne Vixens netball side. Dunkley was linked to Essendon before the 2021 season when they were trying to recruit his brother, but when Josh stayed at the Bulldogs, their interest in Kyle cooled off.

He played for the Sydney Reserves in 2018, and VFL for Essendon in 2021 and Northern Bullants in 2022, before joining Brisbane's VFL team in 2023.
