A talented midfielder who was repeatedly overlooked by AFL clubs despite strong performances in the VFA, Dyson started at South Blackburn and played Reserves for both Fitzroy and Carlton before joining Mornington.
Unable to kickstart a VFL career he moved to VFA side Oakleigh and was best on ground in a 1990 state representative match against the ACT League. His impressive performances for Oakleigh won him a chance as a fill-in for an Essendon practice match against Melbourne, and his performance encouraged them to Melbourne draft him.
With the Swans allowed to pick up two uncontracted players as part of league concessions they offered Dyson a three year contract in early 1996 and he opted to join them. He played in that season's losing Grand Final side, and appeared in 35 games total with the Swans to the end of 1997 before retiring.
