A talented midfielder who was repeatedly overlooked by AFL clubs despite strong performances in the VFA, Dyson started at South Blackburn and played Reserves for both Fitzroy and Carlton before joining Mornington.

Unable to kickstart a VFL career he joined Oakleigh and was voted as Best on Ground for the VFA in a 1990 state representative match against the ACT League. His impressive performances for Oakleigh saw him win a chance as a fill-in player for Essendon in a practice match against Melbourne, and his performance against the Demons encouraged them to Melbourne draft him.

With the Swans allowed to pick up two uncontracted players as part of league concessions they offered Dyson a three year contract in early 1996 and he played in that season's losing Grand Final side.
