After three wins in a row the improving Demons, so awful earlier in the year, faced their sternest challenge in the second place Blues. Melbourne surprised the Blues with their confidence early, catching them off their game for a two point lead at quarter time. They were surprisingly level at the half, but the Blues managed to shake them off in the third term when Alex Marcou booted two goals in a row. It was also thanks to Ross Ditchburn who kicked 6.3.

Some of Melbourne's best players were having a down day but they were carried by their youngsters and key-forward Mark Jackson. Carlton coach David Parkin had to shift his players around to finally break the Demons, and each side kicked four goals in the last quarter. Melbourne got back within 11 during the last term but they couldn't close the gap any further.

Ron Barassi spoke highly of his players despite the loss. He said "We were a bit out-gunned and we need a few players down the spine but our guys kept coming back. It was a good performance".

Best were Johnson, Icke and Keenan.
