June 1873 match vs Collingwood

Saturday 28 June - Melbourne Ground
Crowd: 3000-4000

Melbourne 1
Collingwood 1 (half time 1-1)

Match drawn

Goalkicker: T. Reade

The junior club played with a two man advantage, 20 to 18, but were immediately on the defensive as Melbourne pressed for a quick opening goal. Collingwood held them back, but the ball was never away from their goal for long. Despite Melbourne's domination it took an hour for Reade to open the scoring.

After the change of ends Collingwood remained on the back foot, desperately guarding their goal. With the usual problem of spectators spilling onto the ground making play hard, the visitors got lucky in the last 10 minutes. The ball emerged from the crowd, along the wing and for a goal from their first attack of the day.

Best were C. Carr, Forrester and Moore.
