The Demons and Dockers engaged in a high-scoring shootout, ending in Fremantle's second straight win.

The Dockers led by 32 points in the second quarter, before Melbourne hit back. Shortly before the half-time break, with Melbourne having kicked the last three goals, a trainer ran inside the 50m arc during a kick-out and the umpire paid a free to Fremantle from which they goalled.

In the third quarter Melbourne booted four goals in five minutes to charge back into the lead.

Matthew Pavlich then turned the game back in his side's direction with a rash of possessions late in the quarter that helped take Freo into the last break with a seven point lead.

The Dockers were 20 points in front in the last quarter, but the Demons charged with late goals from a pair of 50m penalties. Freo held on to an 8 point lead until Peter Bell goalled on the siren to restore the margin to 14 points.

Jeff Farmer kicked seven for Freo, and Brent Moloney was Melbourne's best.

Melbourne earnt an unwanted record by becoming the first team in VFL/AFL history to have three players kick five goals or more and still lose.
