Melbourne's disappointing season limped towards its end with another huge loss to the top of the table Blues - Carlton's eighth in a row.

In perfect conditions they fought hard during the first quarter but were no match for the league's best side. Carlton kicked four goals quickly after the start of the third quarter and were never challenged again. Both sides kicked two goals in the last quarter, but the Blues' four goal burst in the third gave them an unassailable lead.

First game Bill Brunier kicked three goals but his side were well beaten. It didn't help Melbourne's cause that they were missing Jack Connole who had been recalled by Coburg for the VFA finals series.

Despite the disappointment the ex-Blue Baquie was named as best on ground. Other Melbourne players to come out with credit were Bremner and Monk.

At one point during the game the ball was kicked through a hole in the scoreboard, which was being repainted, and was lost. It took five minutes for a new ball to be found.
