Melbourne had shocked the Blues in their first meeting for the season, and despite having a rare strong last quarter they couldn't quite overhaul the visitors to do the double against them in 1924. It was Melbourne's fifth loss in their previous sixth engagements.

Captain Bert Chadwick had been in dispute with the committee during the week, winning the right to ignore their instructions and use his own judgement in setting the team. His changes saw a marked improvement in the side's play.

The two teams played out an ordinary game in the first half marred by crowding around the ball. Melbourne after going two goals down in the first quarter Melbourne should have had a lead early in the second but were hampered - not for the first time in 1924 - by poor conversion from their forwards.

The game finally took life in the third term, and Melbourne in particular showed significant improved in their short passing and kicking for goal. They played better football in the second half, and stout defensive work kept Carlton at bay until the last few minutes of the quarter. Despite having been outplayed in the quarter to that point the visitors rattled on four goals to take a 19 point lead into the last quarter.

They looked home but Melbourne came again, falling agonisingly short in the dying minutes despite having lost Shelton and Percy Wilson (leg) as useful members of the team for the entire second half due to injury. Chadwick moved himself into the ruck, put Corbett on the wing and instructed his men to go through Corbett. With four minutes to play the margin was back to seven points but Melbourne could make no further inroads.

Best were Taylor, Chadwick and Mollison.
