In the first half of the split round, Melbourne's first home game sold to the Gabba earned the club $300,000 but may have cost them the chance to rebound from a humiliating loss at the hands of Collingwood.
Jeff Farmer returned from injury and was impressive, but despite kicking the first two goals of the quarter Melbourne couldn't hold back the Lion tide and soon found themselves well behind. The Demons got within ten points early in the third term the Lions steadied to pile on seven goals in the fourth quarter. Defeat dropped Melbourne to 13th.
Best were Yze, Nicholson and Neitz.
