In their 11th loss out of 12 games, Melbourne all but assured themselves of winning the wooden spoon by losing to the side one spot above them on the ladder. They put in a far more competitive performance than most of their performances during the season, and had a solid lead at quarter time

The lead was as much thanks to Geelong's poor kicking as it was to their own good performance, and when the home side had the wind in the second quarter they took the lead. Melbourne managed to make the game as good as even at three quarter time but two early goals to Geelong sealed victory.
