After having arrested their three match losing streak in Round 10, Melbourne found themselves just percentage keeping them out of the eight. Against a Collingwood side missing champion Nathan Buckley it seemed like they'd turned the corner, but on a dark day where the lights were already on in the first quarter, the lights went out for the Demons in the same time frame as the Pies kicked to a winning lead at the first change.
26 points down at the first break Melbourne put together their best period of the day in the second term and dragged the margin back to ten points. The positives didn't last long, and by half-time Collingwood had racked up a 34 point gap. They went on to boot ten goals to four after half time - only two late goals from Green and Robertson saved Melbourne from an even more humiliating loss.
Anthony Rocca was dominating Troy Simmonds up forward, with the injury wracked Demons unable to find a more suitable matchup for him and despite Jeff White dominating in the ruck the Collingwood midfielders were sweeping everything up without trouble. Even Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin was embarassed by the unfancied Andrew Dimmatina who kept him kickless in both the first and last quarters, and to just ten disposals for the match.
Collingwood won the inside 50 count by 65 to 36, and the Demons barely had a winner all day.
Jeff Farmer, supposed to be returning from a hamstring injury, failed to come up and was replaced by Ben Beams, while David Schwarz recieved a corked buttock in a marking contest with Anthony Rocca and missed the rest of the game and Matthew Collins hurt his knee. Both were out of the match by halftime.
Best for Melbourne on a dark day was Neitz - eventually set back into defence to try and stem the tide. Thompson, Bruce, Wheatley and Yze were also prominent.
Neale Daniher said "A very ordinary effort today. I thought we were beaten in all areas of the game. We couldn't get our hands on the footy early in the game."
