Having never done better than a tie against Melbourne, Footscray came agonisingly close to recording their first ever victory against the wasteful visitors.

A blistering period in the second quarter when they booted four quick goals gave the Tricolours hope of their maiden VFL victory over the competition's oldest club and when they went into the last change 11 points in front it looked even more likely that they were going to beat the fourth placed Redlegs.

Melbourne had contributed to their own predictament by booting 1.8 in the third term and deep into the last quarter they trailed only to kick the last two goals of the match in the dying seconds to steal victory.

Best were Pemberton, Murray and Ogden. Collins was 19th man in the selected side.

The victory moved Melbourne two games clear of fifth placed Essendon.
