After conceding a record Round 1 score to Essendon on their own turf on opening day of the season Melbourne's season had never recovered and they remained only a mathematical chance of making the four even after taking revenge in the rematch.

They had to recover from a 25 point deficit at half time, having wasted a 16 scoring shot first quarter by only manging four goals then failing to score at all in the second. 6.8 in the third put them back in front, and they managed to hold the home side scoreless at the scoring end in the final term to win.

Melbourne's best was Glass. The win left Melbourne two games and percentage outside the four.
