Debuting as a 29-year-old, ruckman Cutler played the first 15 matches in 1930 before being reported three times in Round 15, 1930, found guilty twice and suspended for 12 matches. He returned in mid-1931 after his ban ended and played seven more matches.

Cutler was cleared to Carlton in April 1932 but did not play a game with the Blues. In 1933 he was coach of Rainbow.

At the outbreak of World War II he was a member of the Australian Infantry Force.
