Ruck/rover and defender who was recruited from Richmond's Waverley area training squad and graduated from the Tiger Under 19s to debut in 1972. Finding his opportunities at Richmond limited he joined Oakleigh in the VFA, remaining with them until rejoining Richmond in mid-1976. During his time at Punt Road, Gaunt played in three Reserves and two Under 19s premierships.
In 1978 Gaunt transferred to Melbourne, describing the switch as "the best thing I ever did", and calling Richmond a "very impersonal environment". He was cleared to Melbourne as part of a three-way deal with Essendon, and played five seasons with the Demons.
