The son of former Swan Jim wasn't eligible to go to South Melbourne under the father/son rule as his dad had played just 21 games, but after appearing in practice matches with St Kilda he found his way to the Swans anyway.

Even though he forged a reputation as a reliable goalkicker despite an unorthodox kicking action, Gull was forced to contend with an amazing run of injuries during his career. In the space of just 18 months at South he lost two cartilages, snapped his achilles and tore a calf muscle.

Cleared to Melbourne, the former professional boxer continued to be troubled by injuries, dislocating his shoulder by running into a point post during the Demons' last practice game of the pre-season. The injury ruined his career with the Demons and despite winning the Reserves goalkicking that year his senior career never got going and he was delisted before the start of the 1980 season.

When doctors advised him to retire from football due to the injury he considered returning to the ring.

His sister Robin Maher won an Olympic bronze medal in basketball. He is now the principal of Ballarat real estate company Gull and Co.
