Melbourne's fourth straight win after six defeats to open the season left them with some chance of making the top eight, but they suffered a terrible result with David Schwarz reinjuring his knee. Schwarz had made a successful recovery the previous week just four months after knee surgery but his leg collapsed under him as he tried to change direction midway through the first quarter and he was carried off.

Despite the injury drama Melbourne led at every change against a side who had given them trouble in recent meetings. With Tony Lockett held to five at the other end Garry Lyon was the difference with seven goals and Shaun Smith added five.

Best were Smith, Lyon and Stynes.
