Image Melbourne's fourth straight win after six defeats opened the season left them with some chance of making the top eight. Tthe story of the day was another serious knee injury for David Schwarz. He'd made a successful return the previous week just four months after surgery for an ACL tear but his leg collapsed under him as he tried to change direction midway through the first quarter. He was carried off and missed the rest of the season.

Despite the injury drama, Melbourne led at every change against a side who had given them trouble in recent meetings. The result was not as comfortable as it seemed when they booted the first three goals, but having lost twice to the Ron Barassi coached Swans, they were never troubled again. With Tony Lockett held to five goals Garry Lyon was the difference with seven, while Shaun Smith added five. Lockett was off his game due to a knee injury, and uncharacteristically missed a goal in the third quarter when, after marking in the square he tried to kick the ball over his head and put it out on the full.

Best were Smith, Lyon and Stynes.

Neil Balme said "I thought we did what we had to do. I thought overall we were pretty good".
