The resurgent Demons registered their straight win, as David Schwarz returned to senior football just 16 weeks after his cruciate ligament surgery and booted a goal in the first minute to calm the nerves.

Collingwood were handicapped by losing three players to injury by early in the second quarter, but were as much as 17 points ahead before half time. The game turned when Damian Monkhorst knocked Jim Stynes over and Stynes led his side to three unanswered goals before halftime. The Pies continued to battle bravely, kicking three quick goals before three quarter time.

Melbourne did their bit to keep their opponents in the game, at one stage Shaun Smith marked 15 metres out from goal, then passed 30 metres backwards to Jeff Hilton for a point, before the Pies went down the other end for two opportunities that would have cut the margin to 10. They missed, Smith eventually got his goal and the game was won.

Best G. Lovett, Stynes, Neitz. Garry Lyon was replaced in the selected side by Glenn Molloy due to a quad injury.

Despite making it through his comeback unscathed Schwarz reinjured the knee again the next week.
