A mid-season clearance from the Blues in 1914, Williamson was in and out of the team for the rest of the year. A three match suspension for Unduly Rough Play in his seventh game didn't help, and a 15 match sanction in his first game back proved fatal to his VFL career.
His atrocious record at the tribunal was at odds with his day job as a teacher at Melbourne High School. He'd also been suspended for three matches in one of his 11 games at Carlton, giving him the rare distinction of having received more games in suspension than he played during his senior career.
Out of football for the best part of a year he joined the army at the outbreak of World War I and became a captain in the 1st Australian Imperial Force. Having served with distinction at Gallipoli, Williamson was killed in action at Bullecourt in France on 11 April 1917 aged just 23-years-old.
Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett Junior is Williamson's great nephew.
