Walsh was a late starter to Australian Rules football after representing Victoria in youth soccer. Overlooked by AFL scouts at the end of his school footy career, Walsh spent a year in the army before he was recommended to West Adelaide football manager Doug Thomas by former Melbourne ruckman Peter Keenan whose son had played with him at St Pats.

Once they finally located him, in Queensland about to take up another twelve month stint in the army, West Adelaide got 38 games from Walsh in 1996 and 1997. He underwent an ankle reconstruction at the end of his second SANFL season, and after developing his game amongst senior players, was convinced to travel back to Victoria. Also interviewed by Richmond at he took up a spot on the Demons rookie list.

"Whopper" played 23 reserves matches in 1998 to finish equal second, alongside Darren Kowal in the Gardiner Medal for Best and Fairest in the reserve grade competition. Promoted to the senior list for 1999 he won the Best First Year Player award and established himself as a regular in the side almost immediately.

The Demons traded Walsh to Port Adelaide at the end of the 2004 season. They received selection 43, in return, used to draft Michael Newton. He played 23 games, and two finals, in his first season with the Power but struggled in 2006 and was delisted. Walsh then returned to West Adelaide. He played two seasons with them, and was playing coach of Prince Alfred Old Collegians from 2012 to 2015.
