The second half of the year started with the Redlegs precariously placed inside the four, and for the second time in the season they enhanced their chances of playing finals football by beating South.

After trailing for three quarters the victory was more comfortable than their opening round meeting, but it took the Swans not scoring in the last term while the Redlegs piled on 6.3 to make it a big win.

South could have had the game won had they not kicked 2.11 in the third term. Their abysmal shooting for goal left the door ajar and Melbourne took the hint, storming home to win. The Swans attempted to defend their 11 point lead in the last quarter and miscalculated horribly.

Best were Haines, Harker and Chadwick.
