Aiming for their 7th win in a row the former easybeat Lions travelled to the MCG intent on ruining Flower's 200th VFL appearance. In the end it took just two men to beat the Demons, Bernie Quinlan and Garry Wilson booting 14.6 between them to take a three point combined victory over the Demons for themselves, and contributing to a win of over six goals for their team.
Quinlan and Wilson were the faces of a solid team effort, while the Dees struggled to cope with their strong defence. Gerard Healy was the only multiple goalkicker with four, but it was still only the third time in eight stars Fitzroy had conceded more than nine goals.
Ten minutes into the third term the Demons got within a goal but from there they were buried, 9.1 to 4.5 for the rest of the game. Flower played a brilliant 200th but even with Roger Ellingworth dominating on the other wing they couldn't stop the Lions from running away with the match.
Best were Flower, Icke and Connolly. Jarrott (back) and Templeton (hamstring) were replaced in the selected side by Dickson and Sutcliffe respectively. Bamblett injured his ankle.
