First trialed in the 1973 pre-season as a 15-year-old after winning the Mornington Peninsula League’s Under 16 best and fairest, it took the younger brother of Stan Alves another four seasons to make his debut, the year after Stan had gone to North Melbourne.

Moved to WAFL side Subiaco in 1979 after being dropped from the senior list in the pre-season, then returned to Victoria to sign with VFA side Frankston in 1980. He didn't play for the Dolphins as he went overseas after the pre-season. Played for Mordialloc in 1981 and 1982.

Senior coach of Edithvale-Aspendale in 2010, and assistant coach of Mt. Eliza in 2012.
