Martyn made his senior debut in Tasmania in 1976, winning that year's TANFL Rookie of the Year award. It was the first of three straight premierships, and he was their Best and Fairest in 1978. The wingman was pursued by Victorian clubs, with one offering to fly him to Victoria for a pre-season game in 1978. Sandy Bay initially refused permission for him to play, but after they relented he discovered that the club had cancelled his tickets, and he remained in Tasmania.
Melbourne signed Martyn in 1979, and he debuted in the opening game of the season. He played 17 games in his first year, also representing Tasmania in that year's national carnival. In 1980 he'd played for a Rest of Australia team against Victoria in an exhibition match.
Martyn was suspended in Round 1, 1981, and only played two more games before leaving Melbourne in May 1981, saying that he could no longer meet the demands of league football and wanted to move back to Tasmania. It was reported that he found the training regime under new coach Ron Barassi too strenuous. Instead of returning home, he joined SANFL side Port Adelaide, playing 15 games, including a premiership. In 1982 he went back to Sandy Bay, and won another Best and Fairest in 1982. He represented his state again, retiring from state league level after 129 games with Sandy Bay after they lost the 1986 Grand Final. He was then playing coach for local sides Kermandie and Lauderdale.
Martyn was later named to the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
