Cut from the senior list in May 1963, Rattray found his way back into the side late in the year and played the last six matches of the season - including two finals.

He didn't play any games in 1964 due to an early season operation on a knee injury, and a broken jaw suffered in his Round 2, 1965 comeback against North Melbourne caused Rattray to miss four more matches.

He booted a career high four goals on return on return against the Bulldogs but just two more for the season.

Set to play as ruck-rover or on a half-forward flank in the opening game of 1966 after impressing in the practice matches, Rattray broke a bone in his ankle in training shortly before the regular season started and was sidelined until Round 7. He played six matches in a row but then dropped out of the side and played just one more match in his career.

In 1967 he returned to Tasmania and made a comeback for Penguin in 1971.
