For the third time in six weeks the Demons won by less than a goal. They'd lost to the Bulldogs home and away during their 1964 premiership campaign, but went a step better this time to register a seventh straight win. Their unbeaten start to the season could have been ended by Bulldog rover Mervyn Hobbs who charged into an open goal 20 yards out with the chance to put his side back in the lead but missed.
Despite being beaten in the rucks all day the Demons got home thanks to two Ken Emselle goals in the last quarter, and a series of puzzling decisions in their favour by the field umpire. Other than spearhead Kerry Rattray the Demons didn't have an effective tall forward all day and were lucky to sneak over the line thanks to tight defensive work by their experienced backs in the last few minutes.
Best were Rattray, Alves and Johnson. Tony Anderson suffered a bruised chest and was replaced by Robbie in the third quarter. Lord bruised his thigh.
