The ruckman started his career with the club in the VFA in 1889, and remained with the team through its last years in the association and into the new competition. In 1891 and 1894 he played for Victoria against South Australia.

The Australasian named him amongst the best followers in the league for the 1896 season, but he missed games at the end of the season due to injury.

More injury trouble, a wrenched knee in the Round 9 match against Geelong, caused him to miss almost the whole second half of the year. Another injury in the first game of 1898 was ultimately career ending.

After his retirement, Fry became a trainer for the club and worked with the 1900 premiership side. In 1910 he was a recruiter for the club and later served as a doorman into the late twenties. He also played cricket for Collingwood, and the receipts from a match between them and the MCC in 1928 was given to benefit Fry when he was in ill-health.

He also played eight first class cricket matches with Victoria and umpired a first-class match between Victoria and New Zealand in 1899.
