Fitzroy half-back flank from Wesley College who debuted in 1917 but missed 1918 due to military service. He returned in 1919 and took home their best and fairest, which he won again in 1921. In 1922 Rattray won a premiership, the next year he captained Fitzroy to a losing grand final against Essendon. During his playing career he represented Victoria five times.
Initially appointed as a playing coach, Rattray was ineligible to play for Melbourne as he still resided in Fitzroy's district, and so became the youngest non-playing coach in league history at 25 years and 189 days. With Melbourne knocked out of the running and Fitzroy playing a semi final he reappeared with his old side and won but didn't not hold his spot in the Grand Final.
