Recently retired former Demon and Magpie Shane Woewodin was paraded around the ground before the match, and despite his acrimonious exit from Melbourne, the former Brownlow Medal winner's kids wore Melbourne jumpers. His son Taj Woewodin would later play senior football for Melbourne. In addition to Woewodin, 1956 premiership players Frank Adams, John Beckwith, Keith Carroll, Brian Dixon, Clyde Laidlaw, Ralph Lane and Stuart Spencer were also present, with Spencer providing an original 1956 penny for the coin toss.
David Neitz won the toss, and the use of the wind in the first quarter. Four goals to two got his side off to a good start, and Melbourne's domination of the midfield carried them to an easy victory.
Seven members of the 1956 premiership were also present to recapture the memories of a great era. Adams, Beckwith, Carroll, Dixon, Laidlaw, Lane and Spencer were once again the names on everybody's lips as they recalled the glorious Melbourne hat-trick side of the '50s. Stuart Spencer even provided an original 1956 penny for the coin toss. Fittingly David Neitz was the toss and kicked with the wind. Four goals to two in the first quarter laid a platform for the win, and between the domination of the midfield and the forward line wizardry of Queen's Birthday specialist Adem Yze the Pies were no match.
Neale Daniher said "I think we are improving. How much better? We have to wait and see, but we are a better team than last year".
