Forward signed by secretary Percy Page in June 1936, a year where he kicked 123 goals in the Chiltern and District League. He had also 113 in 1935.

Matthews was cleared to Melbourne in 1937 but did not appear in a senior match despite kicking seven goals in the pre-season and eight goals in a Seconds game. He returned to Wodonga and played in their 1939 Ovens and Murray League Grand Final side.

He was serving with the RAAF in England when he was killed in a plane crash in August 1943.
