After struggling to field a team due to injuries, Melbourne ensured that they wouldn't finish last on the league ladder with a battling win which destroyed the Maroons' chances of playing finals. The Demons were without Mueller, La Fontaine and Baggott but they adapted far better to the wet conditions than their opponents and it won them the day.

Fitzroy had the best of the ruck and in the midfield during the first quarter, but their forward line was blanketed by the Demon defence. The visitors hit the lead early in the second quarter, then the lead changed several more times before half time. The Roys pushed ahead at the start of the third, before Melbourne booted three goals in a row to open a 16 point gap. The margin was back to 14 at three-quarter time, then quickly out to 20 at the start of the last.

From there the visitors were unable to break through, and Melbourne went away to a much needed win.

Best were Emselle, Rodda and Beames. The 19th man was Stone.

Fitzroy 17.27 d. Melbourne 3.5
