Saturday 20 March
Old Scotch Ground
Melbourne 5.5, 9.10, 15.13, 18.16.124
Oakleigh 4.0, 5.3, 8.5, 9.6.60
Melbourne win by 64 points
In poor conditions the opening minutes were highlighted by Fischer being the only Melbourne forward who could mark the ball. Their defence was barely called on, with Oakleigh wasting a number of opportunities by kicking out of bounds before registering four goals.
Both sides handled the ball better in the second quarter, and recruit Fred Matthews looked dangerous in attack. Melbourne were the better ruck size and more dangerous rovers but were being kept in check by Oakleigh's physical play. In this quarter the VFA side only registered one goal and fell 31 points down at the long break.
Oakleigh made half a dozen changes at half time, while Melbourne had 17 players and Deague limping due to an injured ankle. McNamara was also hurt, with a badly cut jaw. Matthews kicked two more goals and his side kicked away. The last quarter was played out with three more goals to one in favour of the VFL side as they registered an easy victory.
