A former state schoolboys doubles tennis champion, and 1942 Scotch College football premiership captain, Heywood made his debut for Melbourne in 1943 before becoming a regular the next season.
He served in the RAAF during World War II and when he returned to Melbourne after being discharged in 1946 he won premierships in the amateurs with University Blacks.
Despite not having played top level football since Round 18, 1944 Heywood was a surprise selection for the 1948 Preliminary Final alongside fellow Uni Black Denis Cordner when Melbourne hit injury trouble.
He played in the drawn 1948 Grand Final but did not feature in the winning replay and was denied his only chance at a senior premiership.
Heywood retired at the end of of 1951 and became a respected football and sports commentator on the ABC and 3AW.
