Collingwood win by 33 points
1 - Todd Viney
Only MFC Game
John Northey reacted savagely to his side's big loss to Richmond a week earlier by bringing in three new players - two with previous VFL experience and Grant Williams who had kicked 12 in a reserves match a week earlier. He dropped Darren Bennett and for three quarters it seemed to work before the Demons fell in a hole in the final term kicking into the wind.
A see-sawing game went Collingwood's way in the last quarter when they began to dominate a tiring Melbourne midfield. Peter Daicos was superb for the Magpies, kicking the sealer in a fourth quarter when the Demons lost their way and became sloppy. His temper boiling over, Allen Jakovich reacted to a Collingwood trainer dropping a water bottle by kicking it away in anger.
Although Jakovich's duel with Gary Pert had been evenly poised, the same could not be said for Garry Lyon, who was blanketed by full-back Michael Gayfer. Jakovich was taken off the field at the 17 minute mark of the last quarter and John Northey was forced to deny that it had been for disciplinary reasons after the full forward argued with the field umpire, he said it was to protect the groin injury Jakovich had suffered earlier in the year.
Wayne Henwood's only senior appearance for the Demons featured a crunching bump on Magpie rover Graeme Wright just as the half-time siren sounded, forcing a bloodied Wright to leave the arena with a broken nose.
Best were Schwarz, Stretch and Yeats.
