Having debuted in 1886, Christy was already a famous name in Ballarat when he was recruited by Melbourne in 1891. His brother Andrew had already played for the club in 1884. Forming a formidable ruck combination in an era of 20 on the ground and four ruckmen, Christy spent five years at Melbourne.

He missed the start of the 1892 season due to being in Queensland, returning in June.

In July 1896, just a year before the VFL came into being, Christie headed for Western Australia for employment and played for Fremantle (including their 1896 premiership side) and Imperials. When Imperials folded he helped to form East Fremantle and went on to play 196 games for them over the next 16 years.

When he failed to gain selection for a Western Australian team in 1908 fans of the club raised funds to send him to Melbourne where he met with former teammates.

'Dolly' Christy is estimated to have played around 480 games in his career between 1886 and 1912 - including 110 for Melbourne. His last senior match came just short of his 43rd birthday. He also appeared in 20 state matches for both the VFA and WA, played in 10 premierships, and was inducted to both the WA and AFL Hall of Fame.

Played for Victoria against Port Adelaide in 1893.
