With their season all but over the Demons could only remain a mathematical chance of finals football if they beat fellow mid-table strugglers South. After a topsy turvy first half the Demons put their best football together in the first quarter and looked set to win until the Swans mounted a desperate comeback to come from 16 points down and win. The effort was so great that South Melbourne's Greg Lambert had to be treated for exhaustion by his club doctor after the match.

Best were Johnson, Hardeman and Davis. Kenneally (cut heel) was replaced by Osborne at three quarter time. Forster was an unused reserve.
