The Demons two month long nightmare continued, and the strain was starting to take its toll on Bob Skilton who ended up in a tussle with Hawk Don Scott during the last quarter. Scott had already been hurt in a clash with Carl Ditterich during the third term and had been forced to don a pair of thick rimmed glasses after losing a contact lense during the incident.

Scott ignored numerous requests by his coach to leave the field, but when he finally agreed to go something said between him and the Melbourne coach started the fracas. He wasn't the only man to suffer a serious injury, Demon Neil McMullin had to go to hospital after a clash with Leigh Matthews which gave him a broken jaw.

In touch at half-time the Demons kicked just two goals in the second half and the Ditterich/Scott/Skilton debacle proved the only entertainment on offer as the Hawk defence took over.

Best were Alves, Wells and Clennett. McMullin (broken jaw) was replaced by Murray in the third quarter and Pagnoccolo by Williamson in the last quarter. Stretching back in 1973 it was Melbourne's 16th consecutive loss.
