Miles Alexander "Bobby" Monk played as an amateur, and started his career at Melbourne as a defender. He turned back a lucrative offer from a VFA side before the 1909 season to stay with the club.
Known as a solid physical player with a good football brain, Monk missed the first five weeks of the 1911 season due to a serious illness. He returned to play every game of the season from then on. In 1912 he was also used as a half-forward, kicking nine of his 15 career goals in 18 games, and announced that he'd retire at the end of the year, but returned to play in 1913.
Monk remained on Melbourne's list at the start of 1915, but was cleared to VFA side Williamstown in May. In 1916 he enlisted with the Army and served during World War I.
His cousin Miles "Bob" Sellers played VFL football for Hawthorn before 1925 and 1934. The similar first names were the reason that Monk was given the nickname "Bobby" as a child.
