Miles Alexander "Bobby" Monk was one of the Reds' most reliable and durable defenders of their era - never playing less than 13 games in a season. He played as an amateur and turned back a lucrative offer from a VFA side before the 1909 season to stay with the Reds.
Known as a solid physical player with a good football brain, Monk missed the first five weeks of the 1911 season due to a serious illness. He returned to play every game of the season from then on. In 1912 he was also used as a half-forward, kicking nine of his 15 career goals in 18 games.
He was listed as wearing Number 15 in the first Football Record of 1915 but did not play a game that year and was cleared to Williamstown in the VFA in May 1915. In 1916 he enlisted with the Army and served during World War I.
His cousin Miles "Bob" Sellers played VFL football for Hawthorn before 1925 and 1934. The similar first names were the reason that Monk was given the nickname "Bobby" as a child.
