Victorian Teal Cup representative in 1980 joined the club that year, rotating between the Under 19s and Reserves. He was picked for a night match that season but never called off the interchange bench. The next season he won the Morrish Medal for best player in the 1981 Under 19s competition. Battiston debuted in the first round of the next season and kicked 25 goals for the season after playing every game.
Out of favour and injury prone in 1983 and 1984 he played just 12 and seven games respectively over the two seasons, finishing as runner up in the Gardiner Medal for Reserve grade Best and Fairest in '84.
On the back of his excellent season in the Seconds, Battiston returned to once again play every match in 1985. He had almost joined Richmond, with the Tigers only pulling out of a deal to sign him at the last minute. He played the first 14 games of 1987 before missing the rest of the season, and the Demons charge into the finals.
In 1988, Battiston moved to Sydney for a reported fee of $80,000. He spent two seasons with the Swans before joining Glenelg for two years in 1990 and 1991. He played 23 games with the club and acted as their general manager. He was later a player manager and list manager at West Coast.
