After two wins to open the season left them in a good position to finish in the top three and make finals, the Demons suffered a fiasco against expansion side St Kilda. The Saints had lost both their first two matches, but took advantage of Melbourne's forward structure falling apart from to win just three goals of their own. It was the second week in a row Melbourne went scoreless in the final term.
