Fitzroy win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: Baird 1, Carroll 1

A large crowd turned out to see if Melbourne could earn their first win against a VFA side for the season. They had beaten junior side South Ballarat a week earlier but fell to their fourth straight senior loss in a row.

The Reds started well, with Baird scoring first goal of the game within two minutes of kick-off, and they held Fitzroy scoreless for the rest of the first quarter despite the visitors having several attempts on goal. The visitors' rough play tilted the game in their favour, and they got the equalising goal early in the second quarter, and would have had another if Kelly hadn't managed to touch through another shot on goal.

Fitzroy wouldn't be denied for long, and took the lead shortly after. Carroll got a second goal shortly before half time but it would be Melbourne's last score for the match. The last goal was decisive, with the final quarter being played out in gathering darkness, with neither side able to add another major.

Best were Carroll, Kelly and Tuckfield.
