The former MCC and Australia batsman became president of the Melbourne Football Club in 1927 and served for two seasons before retiring from the committee at the end of 1928.
In the club's annual report the next year he was described as an "illustrious cricketer and good sport. For many years an ardent, sincere and enthusiastic worker for our club".
In 1929 Joe Blair took over as President, but Ransford later returned and was Melbourne's delegate to the league until retiring to become secretary of the MCC in 1939. He beat more than 150 applicants for the job, including one from Don Bradman. He served in the role until 1957 when he retired due to ill-health.
He was made an OBE in 1954.
